After months of supply issues and courtroom wrangling, HTC might have finally put its hardware woes behind it. The company’s North Asian president, Jack Tong, let slip that production capacity for the HTC One will double this month and continue to increase in June to meet “strong demand.” Tong also casually dropped into conversation that the J Butterfly saw its own sales double in Japan when it became free on contract — so perhaps those second-quarter financial results won’t make for such depressing reading.

Earlier we reported that AT&T’s version of the HTC One would be going on pre-sale sometime this week, and the GSM carrier has finally revealed its official plans: the flagship HTC device will be ready for pre-order online starting April 4th. Both the 32GB and 64GB models, which will be $200 and $300 respectively, will hit retail store shelves on April 19th. The carrier will also offer a free Media Link HD to sweeten the deal, though it appears that it’s only a part of the pre-sale and won’t be available to customers who wait until the 19th to grab it. AT&T’s keeping all of the standard features found on the global One, but it’s also adding its own carrier-branded services — we expect the full suite of bloatware, but the only ones specifically mentioned are the network’s Ready2Go service and DriveMode to prevent texting and driving. True to form, carriers won’t stop being so coy about the HTC One. We still haven’t received any official information regarding the flagship’s pricing or specific availability, but thanks to one of our eagle-eyed tipsters, we at least have a solid idea of AT&T’s particular plans for the device. The operator is set to begin pre-orders of the One this week, with the 32GB flavor being offered in both silver and black hues for $249.99. The exclusive 64GB model likely won’t be ready in time for early adopters, but it’ll go for $299.99 once it does show up on store shelves. Our tipster tells us pre-sales will begin in the retail channel on April 5th, while pending marketing materials indicate the One can be pre-ordered online the day before. If this is the case, we expect it won’t be long before AT&T delivers the official news, and hopefully T-Mobile and Sprint will do the same; we’ll keep you posted as soon as it happens.

AT&T to begin HTC One pre-sales this week, starting with 32GB for $250

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of the HTC One here at Engadget — we’ve already written at length about the handset’s hardware design, software features and imaging chops. At MWC, we were lucky to spend some time with Scott Croyle, VP of design, to discuss the company’s latest superphone. We talked about the handset’s delightful zero-gap aluminum and plastic unibody and how HTC wanted to “break down that last barrier” of integrating antennae in a metal casing without making compromises. He explained that the One’s design was inspired by high-end watches, and it turns out that the zero-gap machining process was developed in-house specifically for this device. Some of the antennae (such as WiFi and GPS) are actually machined as part of the unibody and coexist on the same aluminum panel.

The HTC One just made its first official appearance (unless you count its brief showing by Peter Chou at the year-end party as “official”) on Tuesday, and while we haven’t been given any specific availability in the US, its models are at least starting to receive approval from the FCC. This particular model sports Sprint-specific LTE (band 25) and also includes 802.11ac support, a telltale sign that this is indeed the Now Network’s One. The fact that the docs detail the test unit as a production model is a solid indication that HTC’s flagship is well on its way to Overland Park, and soon.
